Can the cam be removed with engine in truck

How difficult is it to remove the cam while engine is still in truck? I realize tappets will have to be removed and possibly valves. Also I know engine will have to be supported. Just wondering if it is worth it to try it, or just pull the engine

It's probably worth a try because getting access requires no more tear down work (initially) than preparing the engine for removal. I think, though, that you'll quickly decide that it's just easier to pull the engine. That will allow you to inspect closely what else may be lurking.

Do you have the manuals? That will give you the "book" answer.

You can. But the work is easier on a work table than in frame. You need to remove head, manifolds, valves, tappets, front cover (w/ motor mount) timing assembly to pull the cam.

Thanks for the replies. I do have the manuals from when I rebuilt the motor back in late 90s. I am going to pull it out and probably take it to s machine shop to have them replace valves as needed, maybe mill head etc.

I live in Tucson, does any happen to know any good flathead engine rebuilders in Tucson?
