I am wondering if anyone knows a close rattle can paint color for the yellow bridge plaque. I just got the plaque for the grill and need to paint the 4 inch circle on the passenger door.

Back when I was attending the Huntsville MVPA show the guy that founded the TM9 paint company was there. We were asking him about his colors. He had the blue drab paint for the hood numbers and yellow paint for USMC letters as well as the bridging plates.

He explained the can of original yellow paint he had for markings had so much lead it in it was a special hazmat shipment to the paint company that was making his paint. But he claimed his paint was the only one that would match. It was a nice yellow color but I was just wondering how the motor pool guys made sure they got the correct yellow in the field.

Then TM9 was sold to Midwest Military. I looked on their site and don't see yellow but do see the blue drab out there. I say use what ever yellow you can find at this point.

I guy I know here in Ohio used yellow pavement lines marking paint. The color looked spot on, the only problem was the can is made to spray upside down so that made painting a little more tricky. Maybe look into that?

Did a Google search and this is what I found:
“Yellow Drab #316
WWII Yellow Drab #316 is now available in spray cans. This shade of yellow was reengineered from an original can of paint from WWII and an original copy of the US Army Spec. 3-1 paint chip manual dated April 1943.

Replicating any shade of pre 1965 yellow is very difficult since yellow paint prior to then is basically pure lead, commonly known as chrome yellow. This shade is much different than the shades currently available from any source and will add the finishing touches to those Bridge Plates, crate stencils, 2nd Armor markings, Sicily Campaign markings and land mines such as the ones I am finishing for my M-20 armored car.”

One more result of the Google search. This one came from another popular military forum. See attached pictures.

Edit: Had to fix the pictures.

After researching TB 43-0147 C2 COLOR, MARKING AND CAMOUFLAGE PATTERNS USED ON MILITARY EQUIPMENT of December 1975, TM 43-0139
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMY MATERIEL of 27 July 1988, and MIL-S-405626D(GL) SIGN KIT, VEHICLE CLASS of 31 March 1994 I believe the older Bridge Plate (applicable to the M37) should be painted as follows:

On vehicles painted in gloss colors, the markings will be:
Disk, retaining plate, steel bracket, & numeral plates:
Gloss Yellow Color Chip No. 13538 Yellow (gloss)
Numerals:
Gloss Black Color Chip No. 17038 Black (gloss)
Letters:
Gloss Red Color Chip No. 11136 Red (Aircraft Red; Insignia Red) (gloss)

On vehicles painted in semi-gloss or lusterless colors, the markings will be:
Disk, retaining plate, steel bracket, & numeral plates:
Lusterless Yellow Color Chip No. 33538 Yellow (flat)
Numerals:
Gloss Black Color Chip No. 17038 Black (gloss)
Letters:
Gloss Red Color Chip No. 11136 Red (Aircraft Red; Insignia Red) (gloss)

Per MIL-S-405626D(GL) SIGN KIT, VEHICLE CLASS of 31 March 1994 (the newer bridge plate) the colors should be:
Disk, retaining plate, steel bracket, & numeral plates:
Lusterless Dark Green Color Chip No. 34082 Dark Green (flat)
Numerals:
Lusterless Black Color Chip No. 37030 Black (flat)
Letters:
Lusterless Red Color Chip No. 31136 Red (Aircraft Red; Insignia Red) (flat)

Color chips from SAE AMS-STD-595 “Colors Used in Government Procurement” (supersedes FED-STD-595C).

The paint color codes in the previous post are from Federal Standard 595 COLORS USED IN GOVERNMENT PROCUREMENT.

The first number in the code indicates the following:
Gloss 1xxxxx
SemiGloss 2xxxxx
Lusterless 3xxxxx

The yellow plate color scheme was retained into the four-color camouflage era of the 1970's. With the change to the three-color NATO camo scheme the yellow weight classification plate was replaced with the 383 green camouflage-style classification plate.
