people with crazy ideas on value

Post by TOM R »

came across a m37 near me truck has sat under a rubber membrane for 10-15 years guy says he wants to sell ok I go and look, son cuts off the rubber cover, truck is so stripped of parts and rotted there is almost nothing left of it think the rubber cover acted like a greenhouse making the rust go nuts, son says engine is shot but runs blows smoke oil etc. all tires are flat and shotbusted glass gutted doors hell someone even took the windshield frame hinges, bed is beyond gone gauges are gutted or busted, but the truck has a title and winch, guess what the old man wants? 2500.00 :shock: no offers this is what he wants guess that truck will sit till he dies or it rots to the ground the rest of the way, heck all we wanted was the winch anyway, just hate guys that think a pile of rusted crap is worth alot :?

That rubber cover was a killer! Moisture evaporates from the ground, gets condensed on the cover, and comes back down on the truck. He's literally parked the truck under a solar still. It's like having a continuous rainstorm under there! How can anyone be that thick-headed??

I didnt cover my spare body, but I laid plastic UNDER it, to prevent moisture from soaking up through the ground into it, and set it on sawhorses. Its been sitting beside the barn for almost 5 years and looks the same as the day I put it there. The trick is to put the plastic under it, and leave at least a few inches of air gap, because grass breathes, and gives off moisture. The plastic prevents the grass, so it keeps it from rotting from the ground up, no pun intended.

You have the right idea, Josh! When I went overseas the last time, I left my '67 Chevy Caprice 4-door hardtop with my in-laws so my mother-in-law could use it. My father-in-law was a control freak and didn't like the idea of her being able to come and go as she pleased, so he made sure the car wasn't usable. He removed the points/condenser, jacked the car up and removed the left front wheel (which he put in his El Camino for an "extra spare") and lowered my car down on a straw bale. It sat like that for 4 years. When I got back, there was a 2-foot section of the frame that looked like grandma's lace tablecloth! I managed to get a replacement section welded in, but I was not happy! In fact, it still burns my butt when I think of it! :evil:

Rust bucket

Post by Nickathome »

Guys;

On the lines of this thread, check out this one from the steel soldiers website. It has nothing to do with the rubber membrane or tarp covered vehicle, however the guy wants 2K for a total rusted hulk of an m43 that is completely beyond hope, and is maybe good for a few parts only. To that his ad is worded in the threatening manner of "I want 2K or its getting scrapped". Well, it appears the truck is already scrap...

Some people either have no clue what something is worth, or think something is worth more than it is, or is naive or greedy enough to think everyone else is a numbnut and would buy a total piece of junk, or some combination of all....Check it out;

Yeah...I saw that, too. If you ask me, he is the numb nut! He has to know that it isn't worth his asking price. He probably has a solid gold seat on his crapper and wipes his butt with mink pelts! ;)

Scraped...

Post by Nickathome »

Yeah I noticed too his misspelled usage of the word scrapped.

You really have to love people like this clod though. They are the same people who work the flea market circuit and get insulted when you question their reasoning behind their prices for whatever it is they're selling. Take for instance the time I was at a local mil-veh show that was at a place called Jake's flea market. Its a small MV show and we walked through it in only a few minutes. So after that, we walked through the flea sale. I stopped at a guy's table who was selling tools. I saw a decent 3/4 drive socket wrench that he had. It was pretty old, so I figured it wouldn't be priced too highly. Wrong, the guy wanted top dollar. I knew it was top dollar because I had coincidently seen a similar one brand new at Sears like a week prior priced not too far from what Mr. Fleamarketeer wanted. So, being the sarcastic sort I am I said to him rather bluntly " hey man, why such a high price?" He rudely answered "because its worth every penny", to which I replied, "really, I guess the brand new one I saw at Sears is worth every penny too, see ya"...... "jerk", and away I went! I mean I don't mind a person trying to make a buck, and I fully expect to pay for someone good's, and don't mind that they make some profit, but come on! When that person is blatantly pricing things(especially common items) to the point they now are competing with brand new store priced items, then thats a problem.

I got the same thing when looking for a new washer and dryer for my house... I went to a local appliance store and I already had a good idea of what I wanted, so I was pricing them, and the sales guy came up and said "Can I help you" And I said "Thanks, but no, Im just looking right now." And he shot back "Well, lucky for you we dont charge for looking." And he turned to walk away and I snarled back at him "Thats good, becuase I'd have to do my looking elsewhere then." They had the best prices in town, but I gladly paid sears the extra $30 because of his remarks.

And, meanwhile, the owner is scratching his head and wondering why his repeat business has dropped off.

we were talkin about this same truck at our mvpa meeting last nite it is near us and a guy in the club looked at it and said it is trash guy claimed the top blew off when he was towing it home, our member went to open the hood and it sell off the hinges pulled right out of the cowel :shock:
not to mention it is at best 300 as scrap

on another note 1 reason I stopped doin the gunshows was cause the old guys that take up half the tables pedlin crap they've had for 50 years that they want more then new, for old junk parts where you get the oh but it is original, yeak original rusted broken wore out parts someone else probly threw away :wink:

I scan E-Bay daily looking for my needed parts, and I too, surf on by when I see swiss-cheese body panels and such at exorbitant prices. I have much better luck from local MV swap meets and my forum friends-you've always come through when I need parts-too many to name but we don't get our trucks done without this forum, so THANKS EVERYONE!
