445 miles of fun...

Post by HingsingM37 »

Well gang I checked my odometer and since the mighty L245-1042 hit the pavement Memorial Day 09, up through last week I racked up 445 miles  I am really bumming out that I will be putting it up on jackstands and parking it for the winter next week.
After nearly 500 miles all is well except for a leak at the rear pinion which I will address this winter. Naturally this showed up after I put the bed on so I can lay underneath to fix it. I could probably adjust the govenor to get a little more out of her the but she will reach around 50mph and runs fine for what I do. I will leave it be. As somebody says here, "if its not broke, don't fix it until it is.." Oil pressure is good and there is no oil consumption or smoke. Front tires have no unusual wear starting nor make any strange noises during turns. There is a slight driveline vibration noise upon deceleration between 35-40mph. It sounds like a dry u-joint or spline shaft. I will investigate this winter. It may be a normal thing. I don't know? I will have to drive my buddies truck to compare "noises".
I was hoping to get it painted before the snow but I am going to plan for late April or early May of 2010.
2010? Doesn't that look creepy for those of us who grew up on 1960's sci-fi TV? Aren't we supposed to be living on Mars by now?
It was a swell debut summer for the M. The best part is my wife loves cruising in the truck and really digs going to the car shows. Thanks to all of you here who helped me through this project. 8)

Why put it up for the winter when you can enjoy it through the winter? :)

David...

If I had had my M37 up and running by Memorial Day, it would probably have racked up at least 2,500 miles by now. Unfortunately, that will never happen for me. :(

At least I no longer live in the land of snow, ice, and salt! :)

Neither did SD.

Lifer,
I have driven over salt and snow covered roads in Illinois! You must a couple of feet from MO or KY!

I'm in Georgia, now. The only thing they put salt on down here is their food! :)

Well then you shouldn't eat while inside the truck......it will rust from the inside out. :P

HI ALL, I TOO HAD A GREAT FIRST SPRING /SUMMER WITH MY M. I CRUISED IT ON THE NY ROADS, DROVE IT ALONG THE LONG ISLAND SOUTH SHORE BEACHES AND TURNED LOTS OF HEADS, SOME PEOPLE KNOW WHAT IT IS OTHERS ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS, BUT ALL THINK ITS THE COOLEST THING THEY HAVE SEEN. I DID NOT HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO TO GET HER UP AND RUNNING, SAND BLAST, PAINT AND UPOLSTRY. GREAT FUN AND THANKS TO ALL FOR ALL YOUR ADVISE.

Its a great feeling isn't it Bob? It still seems like a dream when I drive mine after it being in pieces for 4 years. I can't wait till the spring to paint her :)
Today for fun, I have to put a cambelt on my daily driver, 98 Ford Ranger 4cyl, broke on me Monday night  Of course, for three years every oil change I have been telling myself to inspect that belt  Luckily the engine in the Ranger is a free-wheeling design so no valve damage occurs when the timing belt breaks. I fell into the "Ignore the PM on the daily driver to work on the M37" zone the last 4 years 8)
