My disk brake conversion

Post by rixm37 »

Here is a little photo essay on my disk brake conversion from Ray Suiter. It's the best thing I have done so far to my truck. The job also included all new brake lines and new wheel cyls for the rear drums. So here goes:

Here are some pics of the hub and seal install including my home made seal drivers. One disk for driving flush and the other to drive the seal below the reatainer cutout

The master cylinder and the replacement spring. You can see how the original spring bound on the M/C so I found a new shorter one at the auto parts store.

So that's a little look at how I spent most of my free time this past summer. It is worth it and the truck stops great!!

Nice work, looks like a professional job. I esp. liked the seal driver idea. Your truck now has something mine lacks, the ability to stop in a short distance. Thanks for the post and pix.

THanks for all the compliments. It has been fun to drive and piece of mind knowing the brakes are all new. We even got Marmaduke AKA Apollo to go for a ride!

Only one question, What kind of grease lube did you use in your front hubs?
Cause in the picture of the front hubs, it looks like regular lithium grease to me not high temp. Maybe there is red high temp grease in USA and if so, it's my mistake.
Down here, the high temp bearing grease is more like tan or yellowish.

Maybe it's possible to use regular grease with disc brakes but I was always told it was not.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to scare you, it's just I've never seen red disc brake grease.
Live to learn, anyway, better scare than sorry. :P

When I did the same brake conversion it was funny the contrast between the grease in the front hubs and the rears.
