TIMING POINTER FELL OFF

Post by JoeM37B1 »

After removing the radiator to replace the water pump, hoses, thermostat, etc., I noticed that the timing pointer appeared to be canted to one side rather than level. Apparently, the spot welds to the timing gear cover were marginal and failed due to corrosion, and the pointer came loose when I touched it. Can the pointer be tack welded or re-attached without having to remove the cover? If so, what’s the suggested method?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Straighten it up, clean thoroughly both surfaces, JB Weld.

Give it time to catalyze, paint, done.

you might want to be absolutely sure of TDC before you re-attach your pointer. Hal

Take out the little pipe plug over #6 cylinder, use a small diameter wire to position at TDC on the compression stroke.

Easy to tell if you put your finger over the hole and it hisses air out.

I did wonder about TDC. I use one of those round English.police whistles attached to a short length of rubber hose which is fixed to a screw in fitting on #1 cylinder. Spin the crank by hand and the whistling stops at TDC. Before the pointer fell off it was pretty accurate at confirming TDC.
Thanks for the reminder.
