OT: Polaris ATV Question.....

Post by Monkey Man »

G'day, OT question....
I am looking at upgrading my Polaris Xplorer 400 2 stroker with chain drive to a 4 stroke with shaft drive, I am looking at a Sportsman 700 twin or a sportsman 500 single (secondhand due to the tight budget), has anyone here had good or bad experiences with these bikes and are there any other recommendations for other brands or models. I do like the PVT auto tranny and TRUE 4wd as I do a LOT of sand work.
Thanks

Best Regards - Tony vk7YBG

Tony, I cannot answer your specific question. But we run 3 Polaris 4 wheelers here on the farm and do quite well with them. I am sure that anything Polaris makes should be a good machine.

I am rather fond of them too Tom, I have a 250 trail Boss 4x4 and of course the Xplorer 400 4X4 and love them both but it is time to upgrade, have 1 bike and make a good choice as to what to get, I mainly like the 700 over the 500 for it's smooth and wide torque curve plus the drivetrain is quite strong, mind you, the 500 is no slouch in the box and diff department either so I thought I'd put it out here and see what is about in the way of experience and opinion....
Take Care

Tom....
Thought I'd let you know I looked at all the options for what I wanted to do and as a result I bought a secondhand Honda Fourtrax (Rancher in the US) TRX400FA and it is a nice bit of machinery. One thing I do like is the ability to drive it as an auto or a manual which suits my beach and bush prospecting habits very nicely indeed. They did have a problem in the transmission electrics that had been modded and fixed on this bike so I'll have to take some piccy's of where I go now for all here to have a chuckle at :-)
Here's a link to the model of bike, I got an 04' model, almost identical...
Take Care

if you can find an older (about '05) yamaha (grizzly is auto, big bear is manual) you will be doing very well. My favorite feature of the yamaha is the differential lock you can get on most years and models, so you have true 4x4.

Honda is a close second for reliable work machine.

Polaris, at least in my opinion, tries to be a work machine and a sport machine at the same time. It's pretty good at both, but it's not excellent at either.

really anything is an upgrade from a 2-stroke polaris chain drive though :)
