G741 snorkeling air filter help needed

Post by Theosaf66 »

Hi There guys,
I have recently purched and installed the fording kit on my M37, how ever I would much appreceate some help of Info regarding the Air filter.
The NEW one is watertide can but has nothing inside to filter the Air, the manual is not really clear for that and I have tried to put with succes the ordinary one inside the NEW one but the vehicle can't breath, really not, so is any one knows how this think is working?? maybe to use ONLY the oil compartment of the ordinary one inside the snorkeling?? photos would help too.
Thanks and regards from GREECE.

Hi Theo,

I'm not sure I got all that, but if you're asking what I think you're asking I'll give it a shot. The watertight can is called the shroud and it's meant to be used with the existing oil bath air cleaner. With the shroud installed the truck will have a hard time breathing, as the shroud only lets air enter through the snorkel pipe, which is very restrictive. The shroud and the rest of the fording kit is not intended to be used on the truck continuously.........it should only be installed right before you attempt to cross a body of water deeper than the engine, and then removed when you're done fording. Some say deeper than the exhaust tailpipe, but as long as you keep the engine running there will be positive pressure coming out the exhaust and water won't get in. But stall it and you'll have issues. If you really want to keep the fording shroud (and the rest of the kit) on your truck all the time you can modify the shroud by cutting holes in it to allow air to enter the carb from under the hood.........but you should add an exhaust cutout after the muffler to reduce the exhaust restriction. So bottom line is the fording kit is good for shows, but bad for continued use. I hope that answers your question.

Hi Bob,
Yes you did answer my question, and thank u very much for that,
One small clarification, by saying: the oil bath air cleaner inside the shroud you mean the whole air filter or the bottom part with the oil?
Thanks Theo

Theo,

When I say the oil bath air cleaner inside the shroud I mean the whole air cleaner, i.e., both the top and bottom. Don't ever run just the bottom half of the air cleaner alone....it won't be filtering anything and will make a mess.

take care,

Theo,
Leave the cover off the fording air cleaner "shroud" and you won't have any problems with overheating. All the parts outside the hood can still be hooked up to give it the ready to go swimming look.
