acme t98 PTO !?!?
does anyone have any leads or info on a rare cdn PTO, I would like to put a t98 in my m37 but I have a lu4 that I do not want to sacrifice for a sync trans but if I could get a PTO or a idler gear to put in my American PTO that would be best of both worlds?

715 trans is a Warner T98 as is the Canadian ACME; BUT the PTO used on a 715 is different, and pretty much a piece of junk as compared to the one used on the Dodge. The Warner T98 trans is a great gear box however; a unit rebuilt right is bullet proof.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Acme pto is very difficult to come by. I spent the better part of a couple of years looking for one to help out Bill Anthony in Churchill, Manitoba. Bill needed the idler gear to replace his that had a broken tooth. He finally decided to have one cut, using a gear from mine as the master. After an outrageous expense, he got a gear but found it to very noisy, so rather than damage the transmission, he decided not to run it. We could have bought a whole truck from Bill Lammers for not a lot more, if it had only been on my side of the continent. After all that, a complete take out pto showed up locally and Bill was able to make a deal. They do exist, but are difficult to find, expensive to buy and still an unknown. There were fewer CDN winch equipped trucks, so less to start with. When the Canadian trucks were disposed of, a lot of parts were scouped up by US dealers, so things like the idler gear, which is the real difference between the Acme and the US pto, are held by people who may not know what they are for. Years ago, Sid Beck was reported to have some parts but after his passing, the parts were bought by Brent Mullins Jeep. You could try to contact them and see if he has anything. Hopefully they will give you the courtesy of a reply, which is more than I got from them. Try to advertise on Craigs List in eastern Canada, the Maple Leaf Up Forum and Kijiji from Alberta and east. You might just get lucky as we know they are out there somewhere...

The Canadian spares stocks went somewhere. I know a lot were sold into the US and some went into the hands of people who may not know or care what they have. I looked long and hard for a replacement idler gear and have corresponded with a number of you on here about this. A single gear, produced using one of my gears as a master, cost $1600. US and ran noisy when installed. As Charles has mentioned, the value is related to how badly someone needed it. I would feel that in used condition, an Acme PTO would be in the $400 to $500 Cdn range. A thorough inspection would determine how much additional cost would be needed to make it reliable in service and not damage the transmission due to a component failure.
If anyone ever comes across the mother lode of Cdn spares, there will be some interest, but likely still a limited market given the low number of trucks produced compared wit the US configuration. I have heard rumors of a barn full of spares in New Brunswick, owned by a gentleman who is a francophone. Unfortunately, my franglish would not be enough to track him down or carry on an intelligent conversation. If any of the Canadians in Quebec or New Brunswick know who or where, I would be interested in being part of that discussion. Marc is a lot closer than I am and there are others in the east as well who read or contribute here.

Shit if they were in Quebec I would go for them but getting back across the border would probably cost more than they are worth unless they were USA made and shipped there then I believe they are duty free ?

Ed, They may be in Quebec, Ontario or New Brunswick but finding them is the real issue. The North American Free Trade Agreement allows most stuff produced in Canada, Mexico or the US to cross borders without duties. Imports to Canada are subject to the GST and applicable provincial sales taxes. This agreement is why a lot of US manufacturing moved to border cities in Mexico. When I bring anything back from Washington State where I have a freight drop, the first thing they want to know is the country of origin to determine if duty should be collected. Although it might be difficult to confirm, I think a lot of parts used to build the M37CDNs came from the same US source that went into the US trucks. The differences are the 251 engine, Acme T98 trans and its mate PTO, produced by ACME in Toronto, Ontario. This was likely done to provide a benefit to Canadian workers for the money that went to Chrylser Canada in the contract. You should be able to bring M37 parts or trucks back from Canada without any duty. Local State taxes may be a different story and your experience may vary from mine. There are restrictions on the export and import of certain products covered under, I believe, ITAR, which are designed to prevent technology from falling into our enemies hands. M37s are too old for that now.

I did sell the Canadian truck to someone in South Florida, sight unseen other than pictures. Not sure what he bought it for or what he planned on doing with it. I don't think he knew the value of the engine, trans and PTO. Even the winch still worked.
The Marine Corp M37 was sold and went to Japan, sorry to say.
