Battery Box mounting
Is there any cushions or spacers that go between the battery box and floor?
Thanks,

Re: Battery Box mounting
just finished re-manufacturing mine. The battery box was bolted to the floor with four bolts. it had four open holes in the battery box bottom that lined up with four holes in the cab floor. Those holes had rubber grommets in them that appeared to seal the box to the floor and give an exit path for .......battery acid, spilt milk, rain water, not real sure what but that's the way it reverse engineered to me. hope it helps.
Re: Battery Box mounting
Hi Gerry,
I did a little digging into the battery box grommet thing a few months back. You actually need 5 grommets, 4 for the mounting bolt holes and a 5th for the hole for the drain tube in the battery tray where it passes thru the cab floor.
BattBoxGrommets by w30bob
The part number for the grommet in ORD 9 is 120013, which cross references to NSN 5325-00-011-7965. The dimensions of the grommet are:
MATT MATERIAL RUBBER SYNTHETIC OVERALL
HUES COLOR ANY ACCEPTABLE OVERALL
AGME GROMMET STYLE 1 ROUND
AAUB HOLE DIAMETER 0.641 INCHES NOMINAL
ABGF GROOVE WIDTH 0.062 INCHES NOMINAL
ABKU FLANGE THICKNESS 0.125 INCHES NOMINAL
ABKW OVERALL HEIGHT 0.312 INCHES NOMINAL
AGMF LARGE FLANGE OUTSIDE DIAMETER 1.188 INCHES NOMINAL
AGMH GROOVE OUTSIDE DIAMETER 0.969 INCHES NOMINAL
AGMU GROMMET CONSTRUCTION TYPE SPLIT
AASF NONMETALLIC HARDNESS RATING 55.0 MINIMUM SHORE DUROMETER A AND 65.0 MAXIMUM SHORE DUROMETER A
CBBL FEATURES PROVIDED COOLANT RESISTANT AND OIL RESISTANT
I haven't found a source for these grommets yet, they don't seem to match up to anything at McMaster-Carr, and John at Midwest Military didn't have any when I called him a few months ago. So the search continues. When I posted the question of where to find these grommets awhile back someone said you can use the grommets out of tractor trailer gladhands. I'm guessing that "gladhands" are the air line connections behind the cab for the air brakes, but I just haven't had time to chase that lead down yet. If you find a source for these grommets please let me know.
thanks,
bob

Hi Gerry,
To be honest I don't remember if I asked VPW.....I think I did.....but I can't remember shit these days. I just did a little digging on the gladhands seals and they LOOK ok in the pics. I should be able to find some locally cheap.....so I added that to my ever expanding list of things to do and hopefully I can get my hands on some by the weekend. I'll let you know what I find out.
thanks,
bob

Re: Battery Box mounting
Just removed my battery box today in order to repaint the interior of the cab and the battery box and lid.
The four holes with the grommets in the floor match up with the four holes in the battery box. They're not
the same as the four bolt holes.
It appears these four grommeted holes would allow excess drainage of liquid from fording or overflow from the
battery tray and still keep any liquids contained in the battery box area and not spreading to the floor board.
The battery "tray" also has a grommet and a drainage tube as mentioned above. A bit redundant there but I'll
bet it's saved many a floor board. No tube present on my M after all these years.
No surprise there.
My grommets were hard as concrete. I chipped them out. Going to get new ones at the auto paint supply store.
They have tons of them in all shapes and sizes. Inexpensive too. The new compounds in these grommets "should"
be resistant to fuel, oil and acid. On the other hand they're so cheap to replace, it won't put a dent in your wallet
if the service life of these new grommets is shorter than what you expect.
I'll bet more than a few of you will go out and check to see if these drain holes are clear.

Re: Battery Box mounting
The floor in mine was pretty shot where the battery box originally sat. It did not come with a box and I had to acquire one. I know it has a tray inside also, but can someone tell me or post a picture about how both are mounted? I had thought that the 4 holes in the box were where the mounting bolts went. Now I have no idea. And how does the tray mount? The only thing I can figure out is the tray is placed in the bottom of the box which is then placed in the truck then 4 bolts go through tray, box, and floor.

You're on the right track. 9 holes total. See the pic posted in previous post above.
4 are bolt holes for the bolts that hold the tray and the box to the floor.
4 more holes, the outer group, are for drainage. These need the grommets talked about in above posts.
(The grommets are installed on the floor board holes not in the box.)
1 off center hole is for drainage from the tray to the outside via a rubber tube. No idea how that tube
might have been attached to the hole. Maybe a combination of tube and grommet. Use your Yankee
inginuity here. Many modern cars have rubber drain tubes from air conditioning housings. You might
find one with the right diameter at a auto parts house or even a junk yard.

Re: Battery Box mounting
Thanks jarhead. Was it a captured nut setup or a bolt, washer, and nut setup that secured everything in place?

Re: Battery Box mounting
Hi Guys,
The drainage tube didn't attach to the tray....it was integral to it. It was a metal tube about 2" long or so that was part of the tray. When installed it would stick thru the middle grommet. Most used trays you find don't have the metal drain tube.....they rusted out pretty quickly. I thought I had a pic of one here somewhere....but can't seem to find it now. If I find it I'll post it.
regards,
bob
