New Member from the UK and pics of my Dodge

Post by paul_bish »

Hello everyone, just got myself a Dodge M37. Been wanting one for ages to use with my Living History Group (link below) and the dream came true (a very nice 40th present from my wife :D )

Its currently marked as a USMC vehicle but started life as a USAF vehicle on a UK airbase, its a 1953 model and has done 28,000 easy miles. The last owner replaced tyres, starter motor, all window rubbers, gearbox, clutch etc so its in very good condition. I will be remarking it as a 5th SFGA vehicle and adding an M134 Minigun (to replicate an actual vehicle from the group we portray) Also looking to add an M101 trailer but they dont seem to be that common in the UK...

Hey Paul; Welcome to G741, the only place on the net dedicated to the Dodge M37 and thanks for posting pix of your great looking truck. Looking forward to seeing your progress as you convert it to a 5th SFGA vehicle and seeing the addition of the M134 Minigun. Please keep posting as time allows since we all love to hear about any work that helps save these wonderful pieces of automotive and military history.

OK Modern Forces...We are a Living History group portraying MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam- Studies & Observation Group), quite often just known as SOG. They were covert operations group tasked with intelligence gathering, reconnosense, pilot rescue in South Vietnam but primarily cross-border in Loas, Cambodia and Sometimes North Vietnam. It was a joint service group ad its existence was denied until 1982 primary as the US was supposed to be engaged in cross-border operations (due to UN sanctions and Neutrality in Loas and Political issues in Cambodia). It had multiple units focused on Psy Ops, Maritime, Classic agent insertion into North Vietnam (a real failure) and cross border recconasense, the latter is teh area we cover. more info here;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_A ... ions_Group

Our display is based on the Dak To launch site in Central Vietnam that was used to "launch" teams onto missions (they were kept their in isolation) and also for Brightlight teams on duty (these were on call to rescue downed pilots) We cover both aspects with a recreation of the camp (where, budget and size allow). We then do photo-shoots, give lectures to the public etc. Our main event is War & Peace in the UK ( a HUGE show with over 3000 military vehicles, but sure you all know about that) We are there in the camp in period, food, sleeping etc, for 10 days.

Here are some shots of the real Dak To

This year we plan more of the same, but adding a radio tent and a control tower. Oh and the Dodge!!!

Best stop waffling now....

Thanks for the history lesson Paul, very nice turn-out. I never made to SEA, spent most of my Air Force time in combat support at CCK, AFB, Tia Chung, Taiwan, 1969-1971.

Welcome Paul, nice looking M37 you have there! FYI, and I'll deny it in a court of law, it wasn't only SOG that made a few trips over the border into Cambodia. That was the only way we could get SKS carbines to bring back. :wink:

I saw your setup at Beltring last year and was really impressed.
