stupid people!
Sorry guys, but I gotta vent! I was exhibiting my truck and WWII generators that I have rebuilt at a local "steam" show this past month when a guy comes up to me and really ticked me off. I know the guy and he has hit-n-miss engines, a nice guy, BUT he says to me "you're the guy with that surplus military stuff". He continued to ramble on about how he has rebuilt his engines and that it's wrong that more people flock to my display with things that were just purchased from the government. So I tried to explain to him that all of my gensets were bought (or found) in pretty much scrap conditon and had to be completely rebuilt, rewired, sanded, welded, and painted. There's nothing that I own that was just thrown on the truck and brought to display. It really made me mad that a guy who pays someone to machine parts for him, and another guy to paint his engines has the stones to judge me and my stuff. At least it's satisfing that he's kinda right, people always stop to look at anything olive drab, then ask you a million questions!
Re: stupid people!
Avoid people like that, There is no way your going to make him understand and sounds like he's jealous. As long as your enjoying what your doing that's all that counts.

Sal is right, don't let the "man" get you down. I've seen that kind of attitude a million times before and yes it boils down to just plain old jealousy. It's funny how the public will gather 'round a restored MV and spend the time looking it over and talking with it's owner and then these same folks will just walk past someone's custom hot rod and never give it a second glance. That pisses some guys off and it just boggles the mind...

This is one of the reasons I avoid going to shows with anything other than military stuff. None military enthusiasts just dont understand our hobby much !!
The guy was clearly jealous that you manage to rebuild your stuff to such a good standard on your own and he needs to ship his stuff out to get done.

Re: stupid people!
To each his own. These same types are in the military equipment circle also. We try our best to build whatever our customers want. Some like it built back to mil specs of the era while others like upgrades and modifications. It really burns the diehards when a modified truck gets more attention for whatever reason than a bone stock unit. I think it's kinda funny to watch how some react. What has stood out to me over the years is 1 thing in particular. The nicest workmanship always gets the most attention. Whether a vehicle was restored and built professionally or by its owner over a period of years simply doesn't matter; it's how well the job was done and the attention to detail that gets the lookers and good comments. While a beater that bears the name of being "just like it was in the military" is just great if that's what the owner has sought after; rarely does this type of truck get paid attention like the nicely restored ones do.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you have the truck that you sought after, don't get ticked if it doesn't appear the most popular at the show. That just doesn't make a lot of sense. I mean if you are fortunate enough to actually own the truck you sought after, what else really matters. You didn't build it (or have it built) to please the world, it was what you wanted.

Kind of along the same line..... Last couple of shows I took the M37 and M38 to I had a couple guys stop by and point of "mistakes" on my stuff such as unpainted bolt heads and markings etc. I asked both where their truck was...and guess what... neither owned one, they just like nitpicking others. I admire anyone thats willing to dispaly their handywork.

Re: stupid people!
Reminds me of the time I found a nearly perfect '29 Model A Tu-Door in a barn in Tulsa. I played with it a while but ran out of money to complete the restoration. So... I put it up for sale and a couple of "Model A" guys from Oklahoma City showed up to look at the car. BTW, it ran perfectly but needed paint and interior. These two "experts", complete with red "Model A Ford" jackets proceeded to nit-pik the Model A for minor things like not having the correct tail light lens. Keep in mind that the body and frame on this car were near perfect. No rust and all the parts and pieces were there like door handles, knobs, everything.
I tell these guys it's not a show car but could be with a small amount of labor and money. Still, they kept picking and picking
at the car. I finally had enough and asked them to step outside of the garage where I rolled down the overhead door onto their toes. Shouted some obscenity to them through the closed door, went inside and had a cool one.
These big shot "Model A experts" missed a once in a life time opportunity to buy an excellent, running "barn find" for very, very reasonable money.
The guy that bought it the very next day couldn't get the money out of his wallet fast enough, loved the car and drove it home. He only saw all of the great things about the car.
So much for "EXPERTS."

Re: stupid people!
I'm going with the crowd on this one. I've seen alot over the years and you will always run across someone somewhere who is insecure enough about themselves that the only way they can feel better is to put someone else down. It often boils down to personality. I've been to many shows where the owner of a real great thing (Car, truck, MV, engine, whatever) is such a grouch that no one sticks around very long. This type doesn't like people and a big reason they go to shows is to show off to massage their own ego. OTOH, a guy like yourself goes to have fun and I'm sensing that you enjoy chatting with people. You also seem secure with your own work, so for you it's not about people telling you what great stuff you have etc. (That said, we all do enjoy that though, right? ) People respond to openness and you'll have the crowd and the grouch won't. In their mind, it's not their personality that's the trouble, it's always some one elses fault. End Psychology 101....
Forget him and those like him. Enjoy the shows for what they are. You can't please all the people all of the time.
