GERALDO wrote:I have had my CCP here in North Carolina for 2 years and before I got it I was eating lunch one day when a retired chief deputy came in and we got into a conversation about law abiding citizens carrying conceled weapons . He was totally against it, my response to his opposition was ; Have you ever been out on patrol in the morning with several not the best of society pulled over which could possibly overpower you and may have taken your service revolver away from you and end your life in a few seconds and you look up and see a car comming and thinking , hope he will stop and help me! I put 24 years in the army and may not be the smartest knife in the drawer, but I am not STUPID and not going to stop and help him unless I am armed , I would like to live a few more years and if I saw a officer in this situation I would stop and help him along with my SMITH & WESSON .357 . but I hope this situation never happens.
I HAD WROTE A RESEARCH PAPER BACK IN MY COLLEGE DAYS, REGARDING GUN MANUFACTURING AND ETHICS. ACCORDING TO THE FBI RECORDS, IN A 30 YEAR SPAN UNTIL 1996, 14.5% OF ALL THE OFFICERS KILLED, WERE KILLED BY THEIR OWN GUNS USED AGAINST THEM!!!!! SO THIS SCENARIO ABOVE SEEMS TO HAVE HAPPENED A LOT. I DO HOPE AND WISH AS WELL THAT ONE NEVER HAS TO ENCOUNTER SUCH A CASE, BUT IF IT OCCURS, I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. UNLESS YOU ARE ARMED, NOT MUCH YOU MAY PROVIDE FOR THE DOWNED OFFICER. ALSO TO THAT SAME FBI STATISTIC, IF YOU GUYS RECALL THAT "BRADY BILL" AND THE BAN OF THOSE "ASSAULT" SEMI AUTO RIFLES, ALL THOSE RIFLES COMBINED, ACCOUNTED FOR LESS THAN 1 (YES ONE) PERCENT OF ALL MURDER CRIMES IN THE PAST SAME 30 YEARS!!!!! AND IT IS COMMON SENCE. WHAT THUG WOULD HAVE $1500 BACK THEN TO GET AN AR15, COMPLETELY UNABLE TO CONCEAL AND STORM A BANK? GO FIGURE...

I see now. I didn't realize you are living here. I have heard that Massa chusetts is like another new Jersey in that your right to carry doesn't seem to matter. That's a big reason why I don't and won't ever consider living in a state that doesn't put any measure on my bein gable to protect myself and my family.

Small yet heavily populated states have very different issues with weapons proliferation. Scared people are seldom intelligent legislators. Most states not plagued by high intercity crime rates and high "In line of duty" loss rates are fairly reasonable on right to carry issues.

I was born and raised in NJ. I left there because I got drafted in 66. I didn't go back because I got a glimpse of the rest of the country and saw that people can live and get along together in most states. It was not NJ's anti-carry laws that kept me from returning. It was the percentage of non-law abiding systems which meant even if I did have a right to carry I would simply become enmeshed in to many fire fights.

YOU HAVE SPOKEN WISELY AGAIN CUZ. IN THAT SAME RESEARCH PAPER, ACCORDING TO MY FINDINGS, DENSLY POPULATED AREAS AROUND THE COUNTRY HAD INCREASED CRIME RATES EVEN THOUGH GUN OWNERSHIP WAS ALMOST EXTINCT. HOWEVER IN RURAL AREAS, OR STATES NOT AS DENSLY POPULATED, CRIME RATES WERE DISMAL, EVEN THOUGH GUN OWNERSHIP AND THE RIGHT TO CARRY WERE PREETY MUCH ALLOWED WITHOUT ANY RESTRICTION. HOWEVER, SOME SPECIALIST SOCIOLOGISTS BACK THEN SUPPORTED THE IDEA THAT THE UNOBSTRUCTED GUN OWNERSHIP COULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT REASON FOR THE LOW CRIME RATES. THEY WERE BASING THIS OPINION ON FINDS OF A RESEARCH DONE IN HIGH SECURITY PRISONS. THEY ASKED HARD CORE CRIMINALS "DID YOU EVER NOT COMMIT A CRIME JUST BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT YOUR POTENTIAL VICTIM WAS ARMED EVEN THOUGH YOU NEVER SAW A GUN?" AND THE RESPONCE WAS "YES" FROM MORE THAN 40% OF THEM!!!!.

In Massachusetts a LTC or License to Carry is issued by the local police department following a background check. There are 351 cities and towns so you can have an equal number of interpretations about who can carry. Some Police Chiefs are quite lenient others are not. There are also different levels that can be applied for. These deal with the capacity or number of rounds in the magazine. There are also restrictions. Almost anyone (without a felony conviction) can apply for a LTC for target & hunting and expect to get it. It is much harder to get permission for carrying a concealed weapon. Possession of a fully automatic weapon requires a Federal License I believe. The purchase and sale of hand guns in particular is highly regulated with restrictions too numerous to go into here.

Here in Arizona you have the choice to carry open on your hip or concealed without a license.
And really it is not the wild west because very seldom you see the open carry being practiced much but you dam well be sure most of the population is armed.
