Front Axle Pinion Bearing

Post by jahrafa »

Hello and Happy Veterans Day!

Hope someone can help me with some information. I have a 1952 M37and I am looking for the front axel pinion bearing. Is the one that goes on the rear part of the axle that connect to the drive shaft. From the information I found it is a double bearing set number 44363-D made by Timken. Is this information accurate? I am having a hard time finding it locally. Is there a replacement part number perhaps made by another company?

The help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,

Rafael

Ah, the hard one to find, and expensive when you do.

I don't have my manuals here but I thought there were 3 bearings in the pinion. Pretty sure DC Truck Parts will have your bearings.

Yes, the pinion has 3 roller bearings.

Definitely not your garden-variety Dana setup.

Setting the preload is a precise and tedious job.

It involves string and spring gauges.

And patience.

And the correct tools.

Otherwise the job is for naught.

Thank you all for the help! and sorry of the late response.

I was able to purchase, at great expense mind you, the double bearing and I am in the process of installation. When I pulled the seal, I found that the bearing was not broken but it was not adjusted properly, meaning that the pinion was loose and had a lot of movement back and forth. I had to fabricate the tool to get the adjustment nut off.

Can the bearing bearing cup be removed from the rear or do I have to remove the differential?

Thank you again!

Yep the differential has to come out. No biggie, mark the placement first of the ends before removing the caps. Easy to do that.

The pinion preload is very tedious to set, as you have to pull it several times to set each bearing set individually.

If you don't have the TM's, go to steelsoldiers.com where the full set of them is available in a free download.

Thank you! I will work on that soon. I am trying to get the vehicle driving in good condition before I start doing body work. Anyone knows the code for the NAVY gray paint?

Here's a tip. Keep in mind any proper Timken bearing dealer (BDI, Motion, Applied, ect) should be able to get any cup and cone at substantial savings over the internet dealers. Most major cities have a branch of one of these vendors. All taper roller and ball bearings on M37's or civvy PW are current production. You will need to take them your part numbers off the bearings. Ask them to place it on their stock order as Timken ships free to their dealers. That will save you shipping as well. Just an FYI.

Hello. Thank you for the tip. I am back working on the truck. I have a local Timken dealer near my house so I am going to check there. One more question. What kind of differential is on the M37? Dana?

That is a pinion seal for the M37, not the bearing set.

The drop-in (complete 3rd member) is purely Chrysler Corp, not Spicer, Dana, or anybody elses design.
