12v vs 24v systems

Post by Redleg130 »

I think I killed my engine, I have a mechanic coming by to evaluate it but it makes a loud clunking sound when running. It moves, but until someone looks at it I am not inclined to move it much in case it damages it further.

As I was waiting to get a diagnosis on the engine, I was looking at replacement engines. I would like to have a running engine in the truck and another in the shop that I can take my time to work on. I found a potential engine, it has the 24v systems with it and my truck is 12v.

What are the general advantages/disadvantages of a 12v vs 24v system? I assume converting would be a pain, is there any value in going back to 24v? I believe it would be easier to convert the replacement engine to 12v (starter and distributor?) then to convert the truck to 24v, but having not done this before, I am not sure what I am getting into.
