M37 with 6D Mark 2

Greetings wise and helpful sages,

This is my first time on the forum and hello to you all. My wife and I just picked up an 1953 M37 project vehicle and it has inside it 6 cylinder inline diesel marked 510E-6050-FL which appears to be a tractor engine (6D Mark 2) modified for driving British delivery trucks??? Does anyone know anything about these? As in is it worth keeping the engine, power etc.?

Again, thank you for any help you can give me on my first M series project car.

while I have no information on your particular re-power engine, I would suggest it is runs, to keep it and just drive it. Converting back to a standard engine would be too much effort to to be worth it. Of course, perhaps someone else will be along and state that your power plant is original to your truck. We would love to see some pictures of where you are starting from.

It is rough and vehicle has been parked since 2002 (but all ran then). Formerly a vehicle for ranger outreach center and their state department etc. trainings. My wife and FIL just finished a body off frame FJ40 rebuild and old Bronco rebuild so this is their next project.

Like I said, rough, but I think super cool.

I just had to go poking about. It does appear to be a Ford Truck /Auto engine.

510E-6050-FL Ford 6D Mark-2 Diesel Engine - 5416cc / 5.4L / 330ci. In 1962, the 6D got a high air flow “FL” cylinder head which was identified by a raised cast-in "FL" as shown in the pictures below. (See Website) This identifier followed the head's raised cast-in part number "510E-6050-E" on the right side of the head. The "FL" head was often back-fitted to earlier engines as replacement heads and/or to increase performance.

Your 510E might have around 100 HP The normal M37 T-245 6 cyl engine has 78 hp. I am sure your diesel has more torque though.

The normal T-245 is not a high revving engine so with the normal M37 engine don't expect anything above 45-50 mph (72-80 kph)

I would say if your diesel has the high flow head and it runs good I would keep it. The transmission in these trucks are designed for off road use. What kind of transmission is in the truck?
