Hello All,
When I purchased my M-37, the transmission has a small shaft where the shifter attaches. That small shaft appears to be held in by a long bolt that obviously isn't how it should be.... Can someone tell me how this should be connected, and also if I remove it will I have to remove the top of the transmission to put the correct fix in place? I have attached a photo for clarity...

That's the weak link on the 1st-series transmission. It is supposed to be a two-stage pin that sits in the transmission shift ball groove, and flush with the outer neck. When they start wearing, the shift ball can start to turn sideways a bit before the shift ball starts to change gears. Charles at M-Series Rebuild knows the deal on these and diagnosed one of mine a few years back. I recall his shop repairs them as well but yours might be too far gone to repair. You might send him a PM. And yes, the pin replacement works from within but again, with that big bolt in place it may be too big to effect a proper repair so you might look for a new/used top cover.
The pin is inside the circle.

Hey there guys,

The shaft is assembled from below, with several parts upside down.

The 88950 is a little different from the T98 ( CDN version )
I rebuilt the 88950 using the Restoration Guide TM, with parts from MidWest Military.
( Pics and comments in another thread )

I also rebuilt a T98 using parts from Woody's 4x4 out of Washington.
( One of the few places that still has parts )

I tried welding the worn locating hole, but the casting is like white metal, so yes, you really need to find a good used one.
Charles T has a top notch repair approach, also here in a thread. ( He's my hero )

OK guys, I was able to find a very good used top for my transmission that was worth the money. My question now is: When I remove the top, is there a particular gear that I should place it in? I'm guessing neutral, but hope one of you can tell me for sure.

I put mine in neutral; it takes a little fidgeting to get the reverse rod in place-just take your time putting it on. That's also the time to top off the tranny if it's low-with the top cover OFF
