M37B1?

I have been around MVs for about 25 years now so I'd like to think I know one or two things, but here is a question that has been bothering me and I thought maybe this group might have the answer.
Why was the M37B1 named B1 and not A1? Seems like all other military vehicles go A1, A2 etc. M35A1, M35A2, M35A3, M151, M151A1,M151A2...you get the picture. Whas there a specific reason the military went with the B1 when they made the changes to the vehicle?
