M37B1?

Post by k8icu »

I have been around MVs for about 25 years now so I'd like to think I know one or two things, but here is a question that has been bothering me and I thought maybe this group might have the answer.

Why was the M37B1 named B1 and not A1? Seems like all other military vehicles go A1, A2 etc. M35A1, M35A2, M35A3, M151, M151A1,M151A2...you get the picture. Whas there a specific reason the military went with the B1 when they made the changes to the vehicle?

OK, here goes...I hope.

The A and B designations represent sequential major changes to an original concept.

The 1 and 2 (etc) indicates a "minor adjustment" to a major change.

In the case of the M37B1, it would appear that there was an "A" version which did not pass muster, so it went back to the drawing board for a second major change, which became the "B1" or first incarnation of the "B" model. If this model had been "tweaked" a little bit, it would have become an M37B2, or if it had undergone a major change (like repowering with a diesel) it would have become an M37C1.

Does this make any sense to you? :)
