i couldnt find a place to introduce myself so here it is.
i just pulled the trigger on a 1965 m43 and this looks like just the place for me to learn about my new aquisition.
i have only owned one other military type rig and that was a willys jeep but i did learn a lot completely restoring /repairing it
i have lots of questions but before that i will do plenty of searching.
but dont be suprised if i pop up with some stupidly basic pleas for help
anyhow
thanks for having me

Hi Billy.........Welcome aboard!

I've already beat you to asking all the "stupid" questions........sorry about that.
Searching the forum is a bit of a pain in the arse.........so if you don't find the answer you need just ask.......it'll probably save you a bunch of time.

regards,
bob

paid $6500 for it.
i dunno if its a good deal or not.
i sold my ratrod to buy this so my wife and i with two dogs would have something to play with
it has a 318 installed and supposedly nothing is wrong except a cracked window and a small rust spot

i am torn between getting some super lug mud tires for looks or getting some treadwrights claw tires with kedge to be sensible because of the ice we get in rapid city sd

Looks like fun. When do you expect to pick up the truck?

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the ambulance community! Be ready to play the role of historic interpreter. Of my three vehicles, I get approached and questioned more while driving the ambulance. Though it is an M725, I would love to have an M43 to complete my collection. You will be glad you have that V8 in it.

Hi Billy,

Your rims require tubes and flaps.....they are not air-tight.
Not "split rims".......they're "split RINGS". Big difference in terms of safety. People are still afraid of them though. :(
Are you asking if the NDTs are radials or bias ply........or whether you should run radials or bias ply?

this is a little off topic, but it kinda fits, because i have a similar question. i have a set of michelin 325/85R16 tires, and i need inner tubes and flaps. i assume the flaps are somewhat specific to the rim, so i should probably get those from VPW or mwm? can i re-use the old flaps? the tires that are on it are still holding air but are getting pretty weather checked. for inner tubes, where can i get something for a 38x13 tire on a 16" rim?

any reason that these wouldnt' work? i don't expect a lot of sidewall flex with the heavy duty michelin tires

12x16.5 skid-steer tubes

Welcome to our affliction...
The stock rims are two part, split ring wheels. These are tube type and use a flap to protect the tube from the rim. On my truck, I recently installed 5 new Yellow Sea tires, tubes and flaps. http://www.disco-tech.ca/hello-world/ These are decent tire that the Chinese knocked off the Michelin design. You can find them on ebay where the specific and pics are posted. STA Super lugs are another favoured tire and the old NDTs are still available new for the purist. SInce you are in the US, your choices for tires will be greater than mine. The current exchange rate has stalled any further imports for me for now. You can do your own tire work, but for both practical and safety reasons, I take mine to the local truck and equipment tire shop.
Your M43 will be a great camping and exploration transport. Lots of room for gear, kids and dogs if you have them all along.
Enjoy the ride....
