Hi Jacks,

I'd check it. A stuck open thermostat will keep the coolant cooler, but for the engine to run efficiently it needs to operate at the designed temperature. If it runs colder than the you'll end up using more gas, have more carbon buildup and more sludge in your motor. That's because if the engine can't get to operating temperature the water vapor (a byproduct of the combustion process) won't burn off, allowing it to mix with the oil and create sludge.

regards,
bob

I put my 180 degree in water and brought it to a boil. It was opening by 170 and full open at 180. When it is in the truck, the gauge doesn't come up to 180 unless I am on a long hill or mtn pass. Is this normal, and are these engines that cool running?
