Carb? question

Hi all.
Looking for guidance on troubleshooting a rough running engine.
I put on a rebuilt ETW1 carb. Engine starts fine. At 65 degrees, doesn't need choke.
Runs fine for the first couple of miles, then starts to run rough.
I believe it is running too rich. Sputtering and much black smoke out exhaust.
Runs a bit better during acceleration, cuts out completely on deceleration.
Won't idle at less than about half throttle.
I barely made it back home.
Is there anything at all that I should be looking at outside of the carb which could make it run as if it was just plain getting too much gas?
I checked the fuel pressure, running about 2 1/2 pounds, maybe 2 3/4.
I tried it without the aircleaner, no help.
The spooky thing is that the engine was behaving similarly, though not nearly as bad, before I changed the carb.
Any help would be much appreciated before I go through the hastle of mailing the carb back.
Thanks,
Dan
