Wasn't 100% where to post this so here looks to be as good as any . I was over on the steel soldiers site talking with a new M37 owner (yes, I did mention this site to him) and this question came up; could the M37 be considered a "powerwagon"? I replied that I wasn't actually sure if it was or not and that it was a good question. I bring this up because I can remember being told that my M151 was "not a jeep" by someone. Guess because it has indipendant suspension, horizontal grill slots and was never made by Willy's? Never the less, do you consider the M37 to be a powerwagon? What's the hive mind say?

No the M37 is not considered a power wagon; built from '51 - '68, and was for the military only in the US and Canada. The years (time span) the Canadian models were built escapes me at the moment.

The civilian Dodge Power Wagon was born in 1946, a spin off of the WWII WC series Dodge trucks of the early 40's era. It went through several different series designations, and was built through 1968 for domestic sales, and continued through 1971 for export sales only.

Yep, Charles I'm aware that the original PW was based off of the WWII 3/4 ton WC trucks (owned a WC51 ) and that they were first introduced in late 40s. I'm also aware of the M37's strickly military liniage as well. I've heard people bandi about the "power wagon" moniker so much with regard to M37s I was curious to know if the collector/end user of such trucks consider them to be "part" of the PW family? I guess the M37 is a branch on the Dodge truck family tree....

If we are talking what people will say; that will never end until the last truck of either series is gone from the planet. People will always associate the M37 with the power wagon and vise-versa. Which way they see it will depend on whether they have seen M37's or power wagons in their past. Folks from areas where both were familiar sights tend to know the difference.

Agreed. At least they know it's a Dodge. 'used to hear "I like yer big jeep" all the time when I had both the WC & my first M37.

CDN's were made from '55 to '57 as I recall. Within the last month mine has been called a "Jeep" and a "Willys", and to add insult to injury my Utah Vintage tag is C989J so what do you think I'll be hearing every time I go out?

It is technically not a Power Wagon, but I have restored a WC 3/4 ton and an M37 and a 46 Power Wagon. And you can almost do all three blindfolded. I guess you could say that the M37 is the brother to the Power Wagon, same genes, just a little differant look.

In my case, it's simply referred to as "Lori's M". No arguments that way.

The other fun name is when people call the M37 a 'Weapons Carrier'... but we'll save this for another discussion.

' used to own a WC51 (actually, it was one of the first MVs I ever completed a complete frame off resto on) and yes, I have heard the M37 refered to as a "weapons carrier." But, it wasn't from novice MVers or the general public. It was from Veterans.

Wonder if the M37 sometimes being called a "weapons carrier" is like the M151 being called "mutt"? I know over on the dedicated M151 sites such as g838.org or on the g503, that debate rises from time to time and it becomes quite heated. Makes me glade I have the g741 & ferret-heaven sites to take refuge on...
