I put a Dodge 318 Poly into my Power Wagon, made a huge difference. I know a lot of folks have done the same with M37s. My suggestion is to keep it a Dodge engine, not a Chevy.

...sigh...

What is your intended USE for the truck?
What is your budget?
What mechanical capabilities do you have?

Lots of discussion on this over the years - any engine swap depends on what your ultimate plans are for the truck.

Many engines - from 353 Detroits, to Cummins 4B diesel variants, to the excellent Small-Block Chevrolet motor, to Ford & lead-anchor
Dodge motors have been installed in the M37. :) LOTS of info as well in the forums... as well as info available on the Power Wagon forums -

See the comments on the other forums that begin to discuss what engine options are available, then disintegrate into a peeing match over
'Dodge is better than Ford is better than Chevrolet' - some powertrains swap in easier, and kudos to the people that love one brand over another.

The truck doesn't know what powerplant is under the hood -

Consider also that other systems - brakes/steering/cooling - will need to be brought up to snuff, regardless of the engine of choice. Note that the
NP200 transfer case & standard 5.83 diff gears don't like to be hurried down the road.

Various transmissions have been installed behind these as well...
