Do you have this tranny?

Post by cuz »

Anyone have a NP 88950 (early M37) tranny that looks like the one in the photo with an upper fill port as indicated?

You may need to find one that has/had a PTO on it as the level needs to be higher. I have a non PTO early tranny (lower position tapped) but my tranny that has the PTO on it is the later model so the case is different alltogether.

Murf,
I dont believe the PTO has anything to do with it. My early tranny has a PTO and has the lower hole tapped.

This only applies to the M37's NP88950 tranny. The later M37B1 NP450 is a different looking case and has a different gear oil quantity.

A handful of early NP88950 tranny housings had the filler port over 6" from the bottom of the case and the servicing note in the TM's directing you only fill to the top rear PTO cover bolt hole applies only to that very early case used in the first couple months of M37 production in 1951. It is a photo of this case that I am looking for and I think I have found one and should have a photo soon.

Hi Wes,

Here's the tranny pictures you requested. Let me know if there's any thing else you need.

Thanks

Michael M

So, I wonder why the tranny case was designed with such a large boss for the filler plug. Its almost like they knew they might need to move it down in the future.

Tim,
I think it most likely had something to do with an entirely different vehicle application for the same tranny housing. Perhaps someone here is in the tranny rebuild business and can give us an idea of what other vehicles used this same tranny housing. Perhaps there's an application out there that required different fluid levels based on installation angles and etc.

Hi Cuz,
That makes sense. Dodge was famous for pulling odds and ends off the parts shelf and using them in different applications. Pretty smart that way actually!

Are you still in need of a tranny? I have two with the plug at the upper location. Both trannys need to be rebuilt.
