hi guys;can anyone tell me if the front knuckle felt is supposed to be installed dry or not . i've never changed one and i can't find any info on the subject. i'm getting ready to install one of ray's front disc kits and figure i should freshen up everything in the front end while i'm at it.

I soaked mine in light oil. Squeezed out the excess and installed them. I do not recall whether I was told to do this or read it but it seemed SOP for felts in the past on other vintage machines I had worked on. :)

Soaking in oil isn't needed. When you fill the knuckle cavities with new grease, the oil that is in the grease will soak into the felt extremely fast. All the oil you put on them from soaking will only wind up on the floor.

I used Marvel Mystery oil. It was a messy operation. I did not know these could be installed dry. I would do as Charles recommends as I had oil dripping for a few days as the felts wrung themselves out :)
