28.5 VDC Generator Set

Post by Carter »

A buddy of mine, Ralph, gave me this generator set last week. it's a MEP-025A made in 1968. It didn't run and he was not going to use it or try to make it run. It's a gas powered unit that makes 28.5 volts DC, 52 amps. I was able to get it running after removing and cleaning the stale gas smelling brown goo that had clogged the carb, tank, lines and pump. It does generate power but I need to install a new voltage adjusting variable resistor because the one that's in it has a burned/dead spot. I plan to use it to jump start vehicles or to power a trucks radio setup when the engine is not running. You just can't beat free. Carter

Maybe someday I'll actually need it, who knows. I'm working on a deal to get another M37 project truck and the generator may actually come in handy, at least that's what I told my wife

Installed new control box

Post by Carter »

The voltage control variable resistor was burned out. After finding out what a new one cost from several parts houses plus shipping then found new boxes at Army Surplus Warehouse for not a lot more money I decided to replace the entire box. The new one was dated 9/86 but looked like it was made last week. Now the set makes 28VDC and can be set as low as 20 and as high as 40VDC. I have yet to load test it but I believe it should work well.
The first shot is of the set with the old box, the others are of the new one installed. Carter

Lifer, the control box was only $79.90 delivered and was a just about double what the resistor cost also including delivery and I got all the rest of the components and the box with it's new data plates in the deal. You are right, you can't beat that with a stick. The unit runs great now and all I have to do is figure a way to put a load on it. Wish I had a load bank.
