There are "other ways," but they all tend to result in damage to the steering wheel.

Using the proper puller is by far the best way to go.

I am probably going to replace the wheel. All three spokes are cracked. Do rental shops carry the correct type of puller?
Thanks,

Gerry,
Start with soaking the splines with a good penetrant such as PB Blaster or Free-all. Do this several times over a couple days. Take your time with this procedure as you may widh to salvage your wheel.
I used a 5.000" split shaft collar wrapped in that water pipe foam insulation around the hub of the wheel. I then used a three jaw puller. It worked well with only a minor chip when I got in a hurry and the puller slipped. Unfortunatley I do not have any photos of my set up.
I repaired my steering wheel very nicely with Loctite expoxy. I had 3/4" gaps in the spokes. I sanded and filled in the small divits with spot putty. After a coat of paint it looked great. Sure beat $125 for a new one.

I rented a puller that just barely made the grab. We soaked it with PB Blaster for awhile, applied tension with the puller. We used a 2x4 on end to lightly tap at the base of the steering wheel. You could see the movement but it was slow go...

I've got the military puller.
Give me your address and I'll ship it to you.
Just return the shipping cost back when you return it.
