I hate that type of dirty work-paint stripping or sandblasting-just a PITA.

Me too.
After the air compressor bombed out, I was going to install new headlights instead of finishing the stripping of the rims, and my first impression was that the headlight rims were in better shape than I expected them to be with the exception of some minor rust. Yeah right.
After stripping the right one and removing one dent, I tackled the rust removal. It turns out there are a number of pinholes and some substantial pitting on the inside. Overall integrity of that headlight rim is still sound though.
I can think of four ways to do the repair, but probably rosin core solder will be most permanent; I'll go with that. So - that and getting it primed are my projects for today.

Well, I punted. After getting the headlight rim cleaned up to the extent I could, there was too much rust layering remaining that I couldn't dissolve. So, I tried some glass reinforced bondo reduced with extra styrene to make it flow better and am going with that.

I ordered a reproduction set of Warn M13 lockouts today and took a tailgate parts list to a metal supply house to get a price on the stuff I need to build the 708 tailgate.
Not looking forward to that.

Yeah that might sting a bit.
