Any hints, tips?
Can the clutch be accessed from the transmission side while the engine is still installed?

Clutch access is by removal of the transmission. The transmission is easier to remove from above. Remove the floorboards. Support the trans and unbolt everything. 2 guys can lift it out. A cherry picker is easiest.

Or support and drop the tranny to the floor - access from the top.

You can remove the bell housing dust cover attached below the bell housing behind the engine. That will expose the flywheel and pressure plate, etc. You'll be able to make an exterior inspection, but as the other guys said, you'll have to drop the transmission to do any work.
