Aluminum and Brass Reaction

Post by delta31 »

Is the follwing problem becasue of anode/cathode/electrolosis ?

The clutch shifter rod in our LU4 winch was badly pitted. We brazed the pitted section and then
On a lathe turned brazing down to the diamter of the clean part of the rod.

This resulted in a brazed section about 5/8 inch just below the shifter handle.

Would this create a situation for significant corosion of the aluminum housing due to
The brass and aluminum reacting with each other?

The gear is brass, so I doubt it.

I suspect that area of the handle's shaft rusts up due to exposure to condensation/humidity. It's well over the oil level and if the winch is used infrequently it won't have much in the way of protection from any oil. I painted mine with graphite and intend to cycle the winch frequently to circulate the oil and prevent the type of corrosion damage I saw when we tore it down.

What Andy said.

When I put mine together, I used water resistant marine grease on the shaft and put a lot at the top where rain might get in. I know it's not long lasting but something to try. Alan
