Steering knuckle related questions

Post by RedUtilityTruck »

Steering knuckle Rebuild in progress:

I am wondering if there should be some type of sealant between the steering knuckle and spindle flange? It does not look like there is any as I am pulling this apart, Is that the correct assumption?

Also I got some new felts from Midwest Military. Obviously I don't know what I am doing, as they "appear" to be longer than the felt retainer. How does one get the felt retainer to hold the whole felt?

Any and all suggestions or experience welcome.
Thanks,
Jason

I used some of that 'Right Stuff' sealer on the spindle to knuckle surfaces.

To get the felt retainer to hold the whole felt you squish it in there and the wavy washer holds it in place.

Ok, "The right stuff" it will be!

and I will just get ready for a struggle with the felt.. that clarifies things in my mind.

Thanks.

I just remembered there is an angle to the wavy washer. When faced the correct way it keeps the felt in.

So the wavy spring that goes under the felt, can go into the retainer two different ways? Thanks for this information. I have no understanding yet about what it means, the originals were crumbled and broken, but I will try to approach it with an open mind, and see what becomes of the exploration.
