On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.

my son turns 39 today. For years he has reflected that 9/11 is a lousy day to celebrate. Some history changing events such as Pearl Harbor (before I was born of course), Kennedy's assignation, even Elvis' death (not history changing, just a complete surprise to me and others), just remain forever precise in our memories. When I saw pictures showing tiny people leaping to their death, I could never again look at any pictures of that terrible day. We should not forget the heroism of those who commandeered and crashed the plane heading to destroy our capitol building. Such a terrible event.

I wish there was a way to tell those who died then and since, that we will pursue those who did this, and want to do it again, with all the vengeance of our ability.
