Front Propeller Shaft Removal

Post by LegionPiper »

Hi folks,
My front shaft has a significant wobble to it.
So much so that it's really concerning in 3rd...

I am going to pull it and take it to a Drive-Line Specialist here in Toronto.
The Restore Manual makes it look simple.

My question is, is there Oil inside of the Propeller Shaft Tube ?
I am wondering what to expect when I drop this puppy.
:)

Instructions for assembly:
1) Install splined yoke oil seal cap (M) on propeller shaft
tube splines, followed by splined yoke oil seal washer
( N), splined yoke oil seal (P), and the other splined
yoke oil-seal washer (Q). Engage splined yoke (R) with
splined end of propeller shaft tube (L) and screw splined
yoke oil seal cap (M) on threaded end of splined yoke.
Tighten cap until oil seal is firmly compressed

They are pretty easy to deal with. You may want to pick up a new felt seal, u joints, and a new set of splined bolts with locking nuts while you have the shaft out. I had the shafts in my truck balanced and one required a new tube due to a healthy dent. Judging by the hole in the floor it has lost a driveshaft in the past  !

Thanks so much Andy, particularly for the additional suggestions.

Hopefully the drive-line shop can deal with massive curve in mine.
:)

Say, did you get your new one from Napa ? I read in a thread somewhere someone had ordered their parts via Napa which apparently still stocks them ?

Thanks again.

P.S. I'm guessing the rig can be driven with the Front Shaft removed ? ( At least enough to move it about on our lot ? )

I purchased the felt from John at MWM and picked up the U-joints locally:

If the shaft is visibly bent it will likely need a new tube. You shouldn't have any issues driving the truck w/o the front shaft.

If it isn't bent, the joints are good and it is vibrating badly, it might not be timed correctly. Someone may have assembled it incorrectly at the slip yoke.

very good call. you want the joints lined up + + not + X

in addition, you also want the ears of the shaft lined up with each other, if that makes any sense

Now that's interesting !

I'll make sure to check the alignment before I re-install.
When you say "Ears" you mean the tops of each U are lined up on each end of the shaft ?
( So they rotate at the same time within each revolution ? )

We pulled her out and spent an hour in the parts washer.
Looks like the day she went in, what a shame about the gash on the tube.
 :D

I'll see what the Drive Line guy says.

if it's obviously damaged that's probably where the wobble and vibration is coming from. but yeah the ends of the shaft should be aligned as in this model which i hastily constructed, shown below

Before you commit to having it straightened, you might want to consider a replacement. I have contact information for a fellow in New Brunswick that has a lot of M37CDN bits and pieces. You are a lot closer than me for shipping, so it would be worth checking it out.

I'll PM you his information, as I don't have his ok to post it.
