Hood Latch Question

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

On my M I can pick up the front of the hood about 2 inches or so before the hood latch stops me from lifting it up further. Then I reach between the grille bars and pull the latch forward to relase the hood all the way. But that means when you're driving the hood can flop up and down those few inches before the latch makes contact with the front radiator shroud, which is what the latch catches on. Is that right? Is the hood supposed to be allowed to flop up and down those few inches while you're driving? Or am I missing something (both figuratively and physically).

thanks,
bob

There should be two hood hold downs on your hood (one on each side). I can't post pictures on this site, but hopefully, someone will be along who can.

If you go look at some of the photos in the other threads you should see them near the front on the sides. These are what hold your hood firmly against the rubber bumpers mounted on the bottom flange of your hood that rest against the radiator shroud / top of the grill of your truck.

The hood basically has three latches: one hood hold down on each side and the hood safety catch in the center of the hood (inside the hood).

Go to retiredguy's post in the Graveyard in the Gallery (below) and scroll down to the truck with the gas can on the tire-you can see the side latch catch just above and to the rear of the blackout light.

Wow.....that was a dumb question....sorry about that. I took those side latches off when I first got the truck to paint the hood and totally forgot about them. Next time I ask something that stupid someone needs to come over here and slap me upside the head.

Is there a way to delete stupid posts????

Well now, I may be joining the stupid club, but my memory is telling me that the safety latch on my M has to be pushed back toward the rear of the vehicle to allow the hood to open.

My 1951 M37 doesn't have the latch mentioned in the middle, and I can't see that there ever was one. Is that something added later, maybe with the B1's?

If you look it up on the Production Changes you will see the hood safety catch was added on Jan 1952 Ser# 80017625.

You're right Sal, I went into my manuals CD and found the same production number when it was changed. My truck's production number is 80013400 so it wouldn't have the latch. Thanks for the quick reply though. Joe

Bob:
You're not alone in the "feeling stupid" department. Sometimes I can't remember what I had for breakfast let alone a part or piece that
I took off of my M two years ago. Trust me, there were a LOT of us reading your post and smiling, knowing we have done the same
thing many times. My lovely wife says I would forget my head if it wasn't attached. :P :P :P
