What might this thing-a-ma dudad be?

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

I bought two sets of M37 intake/exhaust manifolds for cheap at Red Ball and I'm a bit confused about what the "cup" looking thing is at the end of the PCV line. The price was so low I didn't bother asking the guy.....I just wanted to get them out to my truck before someone else got 'em. On my M that line goes from the block thru a fording valve, thru the PCV and into the intake manifold. So there's no "cup" looking thingy by the block. I also noticed there's no fording valve in this setup. But it looks like it came off a real truck and wasn't thrown together....so I'm confused (again). I looked on Ebay and found the "cup" looking thingy in two M38 auctions, but they don't say what it is or where it attaches.

So I have a couple questions......what is the "cup" looking thingy......why is it on an M37 setup, and if it's correct for an M37 where does the "cup" thing attach to the motor? Maybe it for the bigger Canadian M37 engine?

thanks,
bob

Bolt runs through it and holds the valve cover on. Its your PVC Valve (positive crankcase ventilation) a gasket seals it to the valve cover.

A bolt goes through it and it attaches to the engine block behind the valve cover.

This might help show how it goes.

Ahhhh.....now I get it. You see, with my fenders still on the truck I can't see under the exhaust manifold. All I saw was a pipe sticking straight out from the block under the exhaust manifold and I ASSUMED that pipe went straight into the block. Makes sense now and I'll take a much closer look tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies on this one.

Here's what I see on my truck. I also have a fording valve (wired shut) right after the second 90 degree bend when coming from the intake.

regards,
bob

Tuko.....that's the best of my wiring!! What does look decent crumbles if you touch it. I'm in the process of gathering up all the harnesses to get it all replaced.....but it's ugly for sure right now!!

Bob,

It looks like your fording valve is wired in the open position.

Hi Bert,

Yeah, that's what I meant to say.....but my hands and brain just weren't playing nice at the time. Both the valves are wired open on my truck....and the fording cable is long gone. :(

Hey Bob, Is that undercoating or crusty mud?

Now Bruce.....aren't they the same thing?

It's crusty mud for sure. When I got the truck in the late Spring of this year the underside was pretty much covered in mud. I powerwashed most of the underside, but didn't want to take a chance with powerwashing the engine compartment. So it's still a bit muddy in there.

Funny thing is......on most cars and trucks all that mud would really look terrible. On this truck it just looks normal. Go figure!!

Bob,

I have a couple of extra fording cables and a dash plate if you would like to buy one.

Tuko,

According to my truck the "open" position for both valves is when the valve lever or acutuating arm is parallel to the flow. So at 90 degrees to the flow it would be closed. Both are wired "open" in the pics below. Now having said that I haven't taken apart mine to verify, but I did take apart a spare fording valve and what I said was correct for that one. Arm parallel to the pipes attached to the valve is open. 90 out is closed. First pic is fording valve in crankcase to intake manifold piping, second pic is valve attached to tube between carb intake tube and oil fill tube.

bob
