Did All M's Come With Jerry Can Mount??

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

Just wondering.......did all M's come with the jerry can mount on the passenger side fender? It's shown in ORD 9, but when I got my M it wasn't there, so I'm trying to figure out if it ever had one. Mine's an Air Force M, but I doubt that matters. Anyone seen or have an M without the jerry can holder??

thanks,
bob

No one on this forum has ever seen all of the trucks produced at the factory to be able to answer, I have seen some without them but all had evidence that it was removed at some point.

Thanks Carter. I just got done looking at my fender real closely.......I'm thinking it did have a mount at one time and got removed.

Bob, so much has been done to these trucks that it is difficult to know what is factory orig. and what is not.

I hear ya Carter!! I'm just wondering if these trucks could be ordered with "options" or if they were all identical within designations (M37,M43, etc). I know there were "kits" produced for things like the cab heater/defroster, but I assume things like the hardtop and softtop were sort of like "options". So I'm wondering what else could have been ordered with the base truck.

thanks,

Can anyone list the measurements of the brackets the support the Jerry can mount? I just finished (about 95%) the battery box lid and it turned out quite nice. Was going to try my hand at the brackets also.

Bob, I would say "no" because the bracket with a Jerry can in it would interfere with the passenger side mirror bracket (which is also an unanswered question-did all M37's have two rear-view mirrors?)

Here's an interesting pic I found in one of the manuals......jerry can mount on driver's side and none on passenger side. Probably an early conceptual drawing, as I don't see a steering wheel in the cab. Anyone ever seen an M with the jerry can mount on the driver's side?? Or one on both sides??

regards,
bob

Pix looks like either a rare RHD version of the M or they flipped the negative.

I am going with flipped negative. The hood catch on the window is on the wrong side and I do not see the cover for the snorkel on the right side.

Flipped negative which was rather common in the early manuals. Steering wheel has been airbrushed out of picture.

Years ago I modified a standard jerry can mount to fit on the driver's side of the truck. For awhile I had two jerry cans mounted to the cab, one on each side. I've still got all the parts around here somewhere.

I took the driver's side mount off when I installed my fuel fired heater because it was in the way of the air duct. The left side jerry can holder had to have all the brackets reversed (heated and twisted) if I recall correctly. The top bracket by the window frame for the retaining strap was the worst one to modify as I recall because it was a mirror image.

Thanks Bert. If it would not be too much trouble to measure the angles I would appreciate it.
