M101A1 Progress

I tore into the trailer yesterday. I am posting pics in my album for those who wish to follow my progress:

I hope to have it ready to paint by early May. Going to tackle the rusted drum screws later this weekend...

That's one sweet project and it's moving right along. Just wondering though, what is the empty weight of one of those trailers?

David, project looks great! You'll have fun pulling that behind the truck this summer. BTW. With the canvas on they make nice little campers.

Matt, 1340 is the empty weight of the M101A according to TM9-2330-202-14P.

Joe, Yes I thought of that. If I could go on the Alaska Convoy this year that would be a perfect camper. I wanted to camp out in the back of the M37 last summer in the back forty although I was fearing the neighbors would think I was insane. They are already wondering about me when I play with my favorite Chinese Martial Arts weapons (spear, broadsword, and three section staff) in the backyard

HAHAHAHA!!! GOOD THING YOU DO NOT HAVE A 50 CAL MOUNTED ON YOUR M37. THEN YOUR NEIGHBORS WOULD PROABLY MOVE OUT OF STATE!!! LOL, JUST KIDDING! NICE TRAILER!! HOW HARD WAS IT TO REMOVE THE BODY OF THE FRAME? COULD IT BE SOMETHING ONE CAN PERFORM EASILY? I AM THINKING OF AN ALTERNATIVE OAK WOOD FLAT BED ON THAT CHASSIS...

Good to hear from you. The body removal was very easy, about 14 fasteners or so.
I have the frame off now . Down to the axle. I will post pics when I get a moment.

As of today, 2-19-12, the trailer is completley dis-assembled. Removed the backing plates from the axle today. Now the next step is to get stuff to the blaster.

Nice job David! Please keep us posted, to include the difficulties you encounter along the way. I, too, would like to have an M101 in a year or two and I plan to "go to school" on your expertise!

Will do. So far the only hang up was the drum screws. I am going to start cleaning up some of the small parts and fasteners this weekend as well as breaking down the wheels. The wiring harness was marginal so I believe I will fab another. The cable is weather-checked so I will replace that since they are EZ to find and not expensive.

Officially spent my first $ on the resto yesterday. Purchased the new hub seals. I am dead in the water until I can get a load of parts to the blaster. I want to get the rolling chasis re-assembled March-April, then paint in May.

Don't worry Joe, you have been making great progress. You'll be in your first parade with that truck before you know it, then be looking for the next project.

I still need to get my radio to that fellow in Berea and stop by your place...I wanted to have that wired up by May. We'll see.

Taking the day off, I took advantage of the 70 degree weather yestderday to take a load of parts to the blasters. My thanks to my neighbor Dan who lets me use his 1/2 ton Dodge pickup for my projects.

I also cleaned my hubs and got them ready for reassembly. I think somebody has been in this trailer before? The hubs almost looked NOS, very good shape with traces of cosmoline still on them.
One rim had no rust when I peeled off the flap and looked very new. There was also an "L" stamped on the left axle spindle as if somebody had it apart and marked it. Unless they did this at the factory?

Darn pump quit on my parts washer. Can't complain as I got it for free, I'll tear into that later. I ended up filling it with a non-flamable solvent called "Oil Eater". It really cuts the grease, a bit sudsy, but it is non-toxic and works well. It discovered it also works very well for cleaning the oil and resins from our coffee maker basket, made it look like new. I had previously used brake cleaner to do this followed by dish soap , which frightened the wife
