Just bought a used winch and would like to kmow if you can check it out by hand. Also is the knob on the winch suppossed to lift up to shift.It will not lift or spin. Is this normal?

Yes it should turn by hand with the help of a punch or like tool in the shear pin hole on the worm shaft. Yes the knob shaft must pull up to release the drum clutch lever to engage the clutch dog with the drum. The knob shaft is spring loaded & is used to lock the clutch in both the engaged & disengaged positions.
