Speedometer clamp bracket needed

Post by HingsingM37 »

Hello Crew,

The cheap a** S&S replacement speedometer I put in two years ago gave it up last weekend. I started to hear a noise and the needle went nuts and stopped at 30MPH. I thought perhaps my cable or transfer case speedo drive went. Upon pulling out the import speedometer I found the back threaded flange completely pulled out of the case. It was merely held in with cheap cement. Long story short I fetched my old speedometer. However the bracket was not on it. The import speedometer case is about .250" shorter than the originals so that clamp falls short. I cannot find my old one. If any one has an old school spare speedo clamp bracket they want to part with shoot me a PM.
Thanks.
I will post a pic of the failed import speedo later.

Thanks , David

I have several old speedometers and will check about a mounting bracket and have an answer tomorrow David, have to locate the box first.

I might have an extra bracket as well, and can check next week if Carter doesn't have one.

I noticed that the ORD 9 SNL lists two different brackets, depending on which speedo head you're using: either AC Delco or Auto-Lite.

Thanks Carter and Elwood. The bracket that came with the new speedometer that is too short is about 2.40" OAL. I need the longer one. Below is a photo of the failed import speedometer.

Are you sure that was glued into the speedo housing? The gray looks like anti-tamper paint. The jagged edge looks more like fatigue failure (probably caused by cheap metal).

What manufacturer made the old speedo head that you're putting back in: AC or Auto-Lite?

I am voting for metal fatigue. Is your speedometer cable housing and cable at an angle when it goes into the speedometer?

Yes, Most likely cheap metal now that I look at it closer. Cable is routed well and lines up pretty good. Old speedo is still good after 59 years LOL.
Not sure whose the old unit is?
Carter, I will be in touch. Thanks!
