Post by paul bestebreurtje »

hallo dodge lovers,
a question from the Netherlands.
have under restauration a m37 variant,126 wb , with frame nr 2661 190 290/eng S25-12450C
to get a registration in NL for road use needed to know prod. date (like to know too)
can you assist please ?
the answer i got from m37 V I N decoder is not correct, says 112 wb, i have a 126 version
when i found the stuff, no body left on rear, so no leads to type/variant , as a long one, it was a V41 or a M43
Sincere regards and thanks from NL rotterdam area

The frame serial number decoder on this website might be of some help: http://www.g741.org/ProductionDates.html, but none of the serial number ranges for the "2661-" prefix fall into the number you posted. If you could post a close-up photo of the frame showing the serial number, that would help.

As for the engine code, it sounds like you have a big-block flathead (251 cubic inches) from a 1962 Dodge truck. Maybe this info will help: http://www.t137.com/registry/help/other ... ngines.php. A photo of the serial number pad on the right front corner of the engine block would help, too.

Your frame serial number is 2661190290
Your engine number is S25 12450C I think, but there looks like there might be another digit before the S?

The frame serial number contained the entire serial number of the truck. The serial number on the tag mounted on the glove box would have only contained the suffix of 90290. 2661190290 is from a truck built around May of 1962 based on other trucks I have documented.

The engine code of S25 crosses to a 1957 Desoto V8 so that is not correct for what that engine is. It is possible there was an export 1957 Desoto 6 cylinder car that also got the engineering code of S25? It doesn't seem likely as the last Desoto that got a flat head six was a 1954 model. Can you clean the number pad better and get a clearer picture? Can you measure the head and see if it is 23 inches or 25 inches long? If you get any other casting numbers from the engine (top of the head, block behind the starter, intake and exhaust manifold) those might help ID the engine. There is also a date cast into the block below the distributor or breather/oil fill. Clean that area and report back on what numbers are there. The C at the end generally indicates Canadian production which would have been a 25 inch long block. I've seen some M37 blocks marked as US.24 so possibly some were marked US.25. I have not yet determined the original source for the US.24 motors, but there are a number of them in M37s. Maybe factory replacement blocks?

I have an S code 23" block in my truck. Never been able to determine the S meaning G as it surely isn't a 25" Desoto. But, it IS a civilian block, not a military block. (Press in oil filler and dipstick tubes.)

Have you looked closely at the stamping on the block of your S motor? I have seen many engines with restamped numbers. If you know what the correct font looks like does yours have that look? What's the number? Maybe it was a replacement block for a Desoto car (even though all Desoto engines were 25" long) and someone just stamped on the Desoto number just to make it legal back when the engine numbers were on the title?

This is it. Smaller than the stampings on my T-245 block

That's clearly a restamp. I don't know what it means. Back in the day engines got restamped for a lot of reasons. I've seen engines stamped to match a different engine number as that was the registration of the vehicle back in the day. I've seen state issued numbers stamped on engines because they had to find a way to register the vehicle. I've seen stamps made by companies that rebuilt the engines and their stamp was their way of classifying the engine. SME9153 isn't anything I can decode. It doesn't match a logical abbreviation for a state. I've seen numbers like MT296687 for a Montana issued number and 399694CA for a California issued number. I just don't see what SME could be in that context. South Maine? There is no factory engine stamp that I know of that starts with SME. There are a limited number of engines around 1958 with numbers that don't match the previous systems, but those are mostly V8s and they aren't SME. So my guess is a rebuild company stamp. There is no way to know for sure that I am aware of, but that is my best guess.
