Re: Generator overcharging
DJ,
I opened mine up and cleaned the contacts very carefully with some business cards and Deoxit. It's possible one of them is sticking a bit.

Re: Crankshaft pulley hub and pulley instalation question
There's a small pipe plug in the head above #6 piston. Remove the plug, insert a dial indicator with an extension if necessary and find TDC of #6 while #1 is on the compression stroke. Then mark your pulley or check the existing marks to ensure they are OK.

Re: It followed me home...
Progress (?) Report We removed the winch and it's completely torn down and nearly ready for reassembly. I does not appear to have been used much. There was little wear and that's good because whoever set it up had the worm gear clearances all messed up. Fortunately they didn't damage the gears. John ...

Looks like they're still available:

I have a set and love 'em, but they do wear quickly since the rubber is soft. Great grip, short life.

Re: Marine Corps "Paper Clip" Winch Bumper Reinforcement
The winch is apart. Other than some questionable assembly work by whoever took it apart last, it looks pretty good. There was some light staining on the worm gear bearing races, but they cleaned up OK. The worm was dated '53 and it has little to no wear. Now it's time for further inspection and clea...

I read that one and the following one. Both have been very helpful. http://www.m715zone.com/vb/showthread.php?26151-LU4-Braden-Winch-Rebuild We'll see what we find in a few minutes when the next class rolls in. It's their first project and they're equipped with a bunch of exploded views from the TM'...

Re: Marine Corps "Paper Clip" Winch Bumper Reinforcement
sturmtyger380, That's identical to mine now. I was curious about any reinforcements added to prevent the "smile". Thanks for the link, I've studied your rebuild :). The plan is to have the winch disassembled tomorrow to see what it needs. Fingers crossed. Anybody aware if there's a MWO out...

Marine Corps "Paper Clip" Winch Bumper Reinforcement
Hi All, My students and I are tearing down the toasted M37 I picked up this summer. Our first project is to revive the winch and PTO. While looking at a photo I found I noticed a truck with a winch and a Marine Corps "Paper Clip" bumper. The assembly had some extra brackets tying the bumpe...

Re: Hints/Risk's Removing tank filter plate
Hal,
After a good soaking, use a screwdriver that fits very well, grind as necessary. Under the screws there are lead crush washers, be prepared to replace those and the gasket. If you need to use any sealant don't use RTV! It will fail. Hopefully yours will be in good shape and come off easily.
