Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

UPDATE !! 4/7/16

I received a reply to my email from Mike at Vintage Wiring.
He is sending me new grommets. Hope the new ones are
longer lasting quality. It is the right thing for them to do.

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

Went through all of the Douglas connectors in the engine bay yesterday. Most, if not all, of the rubber grommets have failed. None, I repeat NONE, of the grommets were in as new condition. Many had split apart, exposing metal to metal contact. Others had multiple minor and major splitting. For lack ...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

My VWM harness has the same issue. It isn't Joe's fault. It is Newstar. The India and China rubber is crap and dryrots in a year or two. (And not just the wiring grommets. Every rubber item I've gotten from Newstar has rotted off in less than 18 months.) My cure is putting a short piece of heat shr...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

Jerry, The truck we just finished working on had a harness from Vintage Wiring that is around 5 years old. We noticed it also had a fair # of grommets that were in pretty sad shape. We informed the owner and I hope he deals with them. I share your concerns about having an unintentional BBQ! The tho...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working. Update 3/22/16

Brake light switches are cheap. I'll try a new one or pull the wires and eliminate the suspect switch. my first suspect would be just after the joining of 17c and 17b on the hi/lo switch. the hi lo switch has two fixed connectors and a short pig tail that could have shed its insulation. next I woul...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

I put a different brake light switch in line....... no change. Breaker still pops.

RMS: Tomorrow I will check wire 17c and b for insulation breaks. Will also check 16 while there. thanks.

Re: How to Remove Years of Mud?

Bob:
You might try driving it into the nearest creek or lake and let it soak for a year or two. It would also make
a neat "hiddey-hole" for large mouth bass.

Needle scaler or hammer and chisel are you only other options. Wear a quality mask if you think the paint
is lead based.

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

UPDATE: 3/4/16 I borrowed another light switch for testing. Same issues... no head lights, no tail lights. Still "pings" the breaker. Hot wired terminal "F" to terminal "H" on the plug end of the harness that goes to the light switch. Good thing I put an in-line fuse in...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

I busted a light switch open and there was a breaker and 2 resistors in it. Plug it all in and turn it on. When the breaker trips, if you still have power on 15, it is the breaker in the light switch. Try hitting the dimmer once and see it the lights don't work. On my truck, the clutch pedal hit th...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

Jerry, From what you're saying it sounds like the problem is in the light switch. Without a diagram of YOUR wiring it's going to be a little difficult to diagnose. Did your truck have directionals or were they added with the new harnesses? Which light switch are you using (early single connector or...

Re: HELP ! Lights not working.

Good advice from all of you guys. I'll dig into the light switch problem tomorrow. Bob, as I remember, on the hot wire from the switch to the breaker, I got 24V. It must be or it wouldn't trip the breaker behind the gauge panel. Will recheck that again tomorrow and run a hot wire off the connector o...

HELP ! Lights not working.

The headlights, tail lights and brake lights suddenly quit working. The turn signals work fine, as do the four-ways, dash lights and gauges. The second breaker keeps tripping. It's the 2nd breaker forward of the gauge panel. I momentarily hot wired around the breaker, with a 10 amp fuse in line for ...
