I had the exact problem three times in a row even though I thought I followed the manual exactly. I purposely installed 1 tooth off and it worked perfectly. Must of been the way I was aligning that it was ending up 1 tooth off.

All hoses are tight and brand-new. Tried 2 different gas caps to check them. I think I will fill the tank to the top so I get liquid instead of vapor and see what happens

I did that and all is dry. I cant find any signs of a leak only odor

Smell of gas around tank
I can smell gas around back of truck but cant pinpoint the cause.Is there a way of slightly pressurizing tank and use soap bubbles to check for a leak or any other way to do this?

Yes she runs. I think I need to Just need to fine tune carb. Idles slightly rough. Had to work today so no time for test drive till tomorrow.

Update.
After trying two more times I tried rotating oil pump one extra spline and the timing was right on. Thanks all for the input. Frustrating it didnt work how manual describes.
